An End Of Year Music List
A few years running now I've created end-of-year top lists. Like many do. I based mine on all of the tracklists for uploaded mixes though. So I could say with certainty that my lists were definitive and objective. I wasn't tossing out the names of friends or just the releases I remembered. It was the real deal.
What bothered me those years still was that it was only based on the published mixes as those were the only mixes I tracklisted. It misses a lot. As I play a lot of records. I set myself a goal for 2017. I would tracklist the whole year. And I managed to do just that. It sucked up a lot of time and effort, but the number of records missed is less than 10. I'm tempted to say I missed none, but I'm bound to have had a small error margin.
So for 2017 my top list post will be all encompassing. It's every record played in streams, at gigs, and privately at home while fooling around or recording a podcast for someone else. It's a biggun.
The tracklist for 2017 clocks in at 1685 entries. The number of unique record labels in that is 561 and the number of unique artists played is 628. I'm pretty proud of those numbers. They're much higher than I expected. I like to think I play a healthy variety, but at the same time I definitely do have certain artists and labels I play a lot of. Those numbers --I think-- show my initial thoughts to be correct. Even though I definitely have favourites there is a lot of other stuff being played as well.
Artists, Labels, Releases and by Song
The lists published below are subsets of the whole data. A single play from the whole year wasn't enough to be included in the top list for what I think is an obvious reason. The numerical cut-off I arbitrarily chose in previous years was 3. I've increased that number as the list was still absolutely massive. So anything with 5 plays or more is included below. For some items I'll also include a comparison to last year so you can see the difference made in numbers between doing this with only the published mixes versus everything.

A good cross section of Techno and House labels from over the years. I don't know that I've ever played a set of all one era. Everything gets thrown in. Electro is under represented for sure as I don't play Electro too often. I like it all on it's own (unlike everything else) and I only haul it out periodically, like Acid House.
2017 Top Played Releases
These speak for themselves. This list is basically the bag of records that defines 2017 for me.
2017 Top Songs Played
And if the above list was the bag of records that defined 2017, this is the tracklist for the definitive 2017 Mix.
I both enjoyed and hated doing this. It made for a lot more to do while playing. Which can get hectic. Every gig out meant I had to carefully put records back in my bag in the order I played them so I could tracklist it the next day. But at the same time... I love my data and the info above puts a big stupid grin on my face. I hope it did yours too. If it leads you to a discovery please tell me. If you have something to add or a comment or criticism, also feel free to reach out.
And finally here's the top tracks played last year. There are 3 repeats that should get special mention. I've bolded them in the 2016 list below. JoeFarr and Alden Tyrell get a big thanks for making so many tunes I not only like, but play repeatedly and for a long period of time.
Dj Haus "Hot In Dis Mothafucka" Hot Haus Records (4)
Dj Haus "Hey Now, Wait A Minute" UTTU 39 (4)
Myler "Cold Without A Hood" Mindcut 08 (4)
JoeFarr "Rolling & Thatching" Bloc 03 (3)
Martyn Hare "Forever Empty (JoeFarr Remix)" Emetic LP01R (3)
Ansome "Hang Dawg" Perc Trax 69 (3)
Oli Furness "Decisions (Alden Tyrell Remix)" Dext 03 (3)
Before I go I'm going to break free of objectivity for one moment..
The final special mention goes to Jerome Hill. While none of his tracks made it to the top tracks list this year or last, if you look at the other lists you can see why. His Labels (Don't and Super Rhythm Trax) were VERY heavily featured there and Jerome himself makes a very solid showing in the Artist category. The thing is...he does so much good stuff I could never over play a single release. I've had the pleasure of enjoying some nightlife and record slinging with Jerome in person twice now. Most recently in April 2017. You will not find a more solid character in the Techno scene. I look forward to my next cross Atlantic trip.
Keep them coming Jerome.
